Feedback on Quickbooks Tutorials so Far
By Greg Lam on October 19, 2011 in Quickbooks Tutorial and Training, sections with 1 CommentI need some feedback.
I have started to make how-tos and tutorials for Quickbooks at http://www.smallbusinessdoer.com/quickbooks/. I intend to post an average of 5 per week.
I have completed my first video post on the subject matter of using the holding account of undeposited funds to receive payments vs forgoing the undeposited funds and deposits payments directly to bank account (sexy subject, I know!)
What I need is people who have actually used Quickbooks, to watch the videos / read this post http://www.smallbusinessdoer.com/undeposited-funds-or-directly-into-account/ and give me some constructive feedback. I haven’t felt entirely happy with the videos, but after about a week of working on this, I figured I should get it out and create some more videos to gain more experience and feedback.
I have a whole strategy behind what I’m doing with these Quickbooks videos (and if you read parts of my updates to my business plan you’d find out more about it). This is the first part of my plan, which is to put out the best Quickbooks Problems and Solutions website out there, and do this for free.
So, the audience for these videos will be people searching on search engines or forums for solutions to a Quickbooks problem they have. They would find the site and get a video that would answer their problem.
Here’s a few things I was struggling with that I would like feedback on:
- I didn’t know what level of Quickbooks knowledge to assume people had. I tried assuming people have done some basic Quickbooks stuff, but nothing beyond that.
- Because of this, the pacing of the videos, the terminology, how much I should explain concepts, I didn’t know how in-depth to go.
- I broke up the videos into 5 parts, assuming that 5 x 1 to 2 minute videos would be easier for people to navigate then one bigger 5-10 minute video. In doing this, I also had to assume that people may have not seen any of the other videos, so had to either re-explain concepts and have the combination of videos a bit less cohesive than I originally planned.
- I wanted to make the information easy to get to, but looking at the page with 5 videos, was thinking is it better to have one page, or put each video on its own page (with links to the other pages and topics
- Another idea for better to organization was to list the videos / talking points at the top, in a numbered list, so that people would know at the beginning if the page would contain the information they are looking for and it would make it easier for them to skip to a single section if they wanted a specific answer.
- For the videos themselves, I used a combination of animation (thanks to my wife’s artistic abilities) and video screen captures. On the last video on the page, I explained an example using both animation and Quickbooks and it felt a bit redundant to me. Did you find it redundant?
I have a few other thoughts floating around in my head, but I’m already feeling like I’ve written too much and should let people give their feedback. Please leave a comment with your thoughts, I’d be grateful!
