This post is part of a series of videos that seeks to answer the questions, "Should I do it myself, can I do it myself, how do I do it myself, should I hire a professional, and how do I choose a professional?". To see more in this video series, visit the DIY or GO PRO page.
Are you looking for a small business lawyer? A business lawyer, or some people call attorney, can help with many small business tasks. This video covers why hire a lawyer and how to go about looking for a lawyer.
The interview with Eric Rutledge was originally supposed to be about how to take the law into your own hands – do some lawyer work yourself – but as to be expected from an experienced lawyer, he advised against it. Make sense after you hear about the training a lawyer goes through.
The videos below are the same. If you have a slow Internet connection, I suggest going with Youtube as it tends to do better, otherwise go with Vimeo as I find the quality higher.

Lawyer Referral Services
- Click here for the lawyer referral service in Canada
- Click here to visit the American Bar Association’s site. You can find a lawyer referral service in your area by clicking on the appropriate state. This link actually took me about 10 minutes to find! I was beginning to think there wasn’t a lawyer referral service in the US. So, if you’re searching online for a lawyer referral service, make sure to go to that link as that is the official site of the American Bar Association.
More Lawyer Stuff
In part 2 of the video interview with Eric Rutledge he talks about starter kits and templates. You can see the video by clicking here.

I agree that hiring a lawyer for your business affairs is a smart thing to do right off the bat. I don't do business law, but I use a business lawyer for my business matters (and my firm is a small business).
Get your business affairs set up properly from the start. There are many lawyers who serve small businesses and they aren't that expensive. As your business grows, you can get proper legal advice from a lawyer who is familiar with your affairs, which helps over time.
Each business has unque elements to it so it makes sense to get tailored legal advice to best serve a business.
